[Our Magic Place] RP with [livejournal.com profile] velvetdoc

It was pretty and sunny with hardly a cloud in the sky. There was a small breeze blowing around the bench Sarah Jane waited on, ruffling her hair and the light blue skirt. It really was beautiful out today, the perfect weather in her opinion for a first date.

Leaning back in the bench, legs crossed and eyes closed, Sarah smiled contently into the sun as she waited for the Doctor to show up. He'd be here eventually, and until then, there was nothing better to do than enjoy the weather.

Sarah Jane glanced at the waiter's retreating back, making sure he was far from hearing range before she responded to the question. There weren't any menus for either of them to hide behind now, so she settled on a shrug instead.

"I wouldn't quite call it dastardly," she said. "In fact, most people tend to consider it to be quite fun."

He steepled his fingers and stared at her thoughtfully. "Not taking over the world then. And energetic. That lets out Backgammon and Draughts. Roller skating? Kite flying? Mountain climbing?"

He could be quite thick when he wanted to be, Sarah noted with a smile. She shook her head at each of those options as well.

"It's an indoor activity." Beat. "Typically."

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
"Ah. Table tennis. I'm quite good at that, you know. Perhaps we might have a game sometime." Not so dense as that, but teasing Sarah was so much fun.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Chuckling, Sarah shook her head again. "More, ah, physical than table tennis, Doctor."

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
She rolled her eyes at that one, mocking a dissappointed sigh that had a bit more annoyance in the tone than she had expected. "Oh! Honestly!"

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
"Basketball. That's it. One on one, often played indoors and very energetic," the Doctor continued, his eyes bright with amusement.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
"You're insufferable," she scowled, giving him a slight glare that was still a mix of humour and annoyance. "Insufferable and thick and oh, it's shagging."

Oh.

That was outloud, wasn't it?

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 01:11 am (UTC)(link)
"Dancing, then. We can go dancing next time I promise. I used to do a pretty good shag." He grinned igoring her insults.

Before he said another word the waiter came over with their salads and the first bottle of wine.

"Bon appetit, Sarah." He waited for her to begin eating.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
Dancing? He thought she was talking about dancing? Even after her face had turned red upon realizing what she had said and all he thought was dancing!

Were all aliens like this, or did the Doctor just happen to specialize in obtuseness?

With an annoyed sigh, Sarah Jane dropped the subject, stabbing at the lettuce leafs with her fork as she muttered, "Bon appetit, Doctor."

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor sighed inwardly. She was annoyed at him now.

Well, he had no intention of rushing things. This sort of relationship with a human was new to him and he was still feeling his way. Jumping into bed with Sarah, however much he desired it, would be a mistake on so many levels. He still didn't understand how humans viewed such things, and he didn't want to mess things up with mixed messages.

Instead of trying to explain this, he changed the subject. "So, James Bond. Are you actually a fan, or just humouring me?"

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 01:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sarah looked up from her salad, raising her eyebrows at the question. "And why would you think I'd humour you with something like that? Aside from the fact that he's a horrible male chauvinist at times, I rather do enjoy the stories."

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
"The book I read seemed to indicate that girls were expected to lie about their interests to make boys like them. Though, I have to admit I found it difficult to believe that you would do such a thing." The Doctor took a forkful of salad and gestured before putting it in his mouth.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 02:46 am (UTC)(link)
"I was eleven," Sarah answered, sighing slightly. He really was out to drive her absolutely mad tonight, wasn't he? "Anyway, not all of the women in the novels were like that."

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor was properly bewildered now. "I wasn't talking about a novel, or that story of yours I read, I was referring to the etiquette manual, which was ten years old and American to boot and involved some rather strange rules about how girls were supposed to behave on dates."

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 02:41 pm (UTC)(link)
"I thought you were still talking about James Bond," she answered, gesturing with her fork. "You shouldn't change the subject so abruptly, and more than that, you shouldn't believe everything in dated books."

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-01 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
"My dear, if you can't keep up with me, I don't know why you put up with me." He took a sip of wine. "And I wouldn't have expected things to change that much in a decade."

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-03 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
"And why's that?" Sarah took another bite of her salad, looking at him curiously. "Short lifespans, remember? We have to change at a rather quick rate if we're to get anywhere."

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-03 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
"But from my perspective it seems incredibly fast. You have to understand that, Sarah." He finished off the last of his salad, twirling it around the bowl to make sure he got all the dressing.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-03 05:43 pm (UTC)(link)
"Then next time don't get an outdated dating advice book. Actually, don't get any book at all."

Sarah smiled sweetly as she finished off her own salad.

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-06 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
The Doctor arched an eyebrow at the waiter, who removed their salad plates. "What do you recommend, then? The only other option I could find were academic studies that bore no resemblance to reality. It's not as though I've done anything like this before."

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-07 03:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Sarah took a sip of her wine, watching him closely. "Honestly? I'd recommend just going in to it. Books can't cover every little detail to begin with."

[identity profile] velvetdoc.livejournal.com 2007-05-08 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
The Doctor couldn't help feeling over his head in this particular instance. He took a sip of wine and tried to marshall his thoughts as the waiter brought their entrees over.

He waited until the plates had been placed before them and the waiter had retreated before he said, "It's all well and good for you, Sarah. You've been raised in this culture and know the rules. I...don't. I needed to make sure I didn't do anything socially inappropriate, rude or indecent. When you've seen a few more planets, you'll understand how much these things can vary from place to place. Why, on Junstre if you share a glass of alcohol with someone, you're considered married for life and on Abanakil merely speaking to a member of the opposite sex would get my tongue cut out. I'm quite fond of my tongue, thank you very much."

He took up a forkful of pasta and grinned at her.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-05-10 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
"You don't think I wouldn't tell you if you did something inappropriate?" Sarah eyed him rather doubtfully, almost looking offended at that. She picked up a piece of gnocchi and shook her head. Annoyance lessened into amusement. "Doctor, I'd probably be first in line to tell you."
