I watch Sarah as she gazes upon our children and feel a tightness in my chest. So much to be grateful for, so much that's it's overwhelming sometimes.

I sense Nessa has stirred before she speaks, but there isn't time to say or do anything about it. No matter. I cross to stand behind Sarah and place a hand on her shoulder.

"Mummy's home, and we're having chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast, with sausage and bacon," I whisper to her. "Just don't tell your brother so he can be surprised. Secret, alright?" Nessa likes secrets, so I hope she'll go along with this one.
