[Mixed Muses] Dinner with Simon and Luke

She can't remember the last time she has really felt this nervous. It isn't been the first time Sarah Jane had brought Simon home to show him Ealing and her little world. But it is the first time she has brought him home to meet her son. It is, quite possibly, the first time that she has brought anyone of the male persuasion home to meet her son.

Sarah is, quite surprisingly to herself, a nervous wreck.

The dinner table is properly dressed with a table cloth. There are candles and flowers on the table and she has actually spent a good part of her day in the kitchen. Her best silverware and dishes aere out on the table. And, she thinks, the meal smells decent enough. She likes to cook, on occasion. But Sarah Jane knows that she is far from being the best cook in the world.

Now she only needs Luke to come home from Clyde's. She turns to smile at Simon, glancing quickly at her watch.

"He ought to be here any moment."

"Oh, not funny, Simon," she retorts, leading him over to the seat across from Luke.

She'll sit in between them at the head of the table. Probably for the best, Sarah Jane decides. She smiles - somewhat awkwardly - at both of them before looking at Luke in particular.

"Well, help yourselves."

Simon uncovers the plate for the main dish, looking up at Luke. "After you."

He thinks he's doing a bad job covering up how nervous he is--though the truth's quite the opposite. He's holding that cover rather steadily.

"Thanks," Luke says, not quite looking Simon in the face for reasons he can't quite work out himself. He takes a healthy portion. He's a growing boy, don'tchaknow.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Sarah Jane smiles warmly as she watches them. She sighs ever so much, reaching for the green beans to serve herself a portion.

"I know I should have told you sooner, Luke, but truth is, I really didn't know how. Simon's a wonderful man. He's been looking forward to meeting you."

[identity profile] slasherofprices.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I have," he insists. "I've heard nothing but wonderful things about you."

Simon's an old pro at fake smiles that look genuine, but he can't quite seem to hide the falter in his expression when he notices Luke's failure to look him in the face. When he tries to broaden his grin, it only comes out looking slightly pained.

He's read about self-deprecating jokes. They're used to insert a bit of humour into a conversation at the speaker's own expense. It looked good to him, especially since his disastrous attempt at humour at another's expense, and Simon just gave him a good line.

"Are you sure you heard right?" he says in his joke voice. The one that somehow manages to skewer any chance of a laugh with its careful tone.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-02 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course he heard right," Sarah replies, smiling at her son. "There's nothing but good things to say about you."

Beat.

"Or you, for that matter," she adds in, looking at Simon this time.

[identity profile] slasherofprices.livejournal.com 2007-11-03 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
"So you say."

How's that for self-depreciation?

[identity profile] born-running.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not funny. Luke could give lectures on how to make it funny, which would be funny considering the source.

Incidently, he doesn't not believe there are nothing but good things to say about himself. "I can't knit," he volunteers, because that is knowledge pertaining to a lack of skill, which can't be a good thing to say about him.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Sarah Jane looks startled at his announcement. "I never knew you were interested, Luke."

For the record? She has absolutely no idea how to knit either.

[identity profile] slasherofprices.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
"Neither can I. I'm also a complete failure at advanced mathematics."

[identity profile] born-running.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Earnestly, "I read that it's good for your blood pressure."

He is very good at advanced mathematics, but he's learned that saying so would be bragging.

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"Is that so?" Sarah grins a little. "Well. It would certainly explain why Aunt Lavinia would knit a lot when I was younger."

[identity profile] slasherofprices.livejournal.com 2007-11-04 11:23 pm (UTC)(link)
"I thought he meant advanced mathematics was good for the blood pressure," he says with a smirk.

[identity profile] born-running.livejournal.com 2007-11-05 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a little face scrunch as he says, "No."

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
Sarah shakes her head. "I can't imagine it would."

[identity profile] slasherofprices.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 01:04 am (UTC)(link)
"It might, if you like mathematics."

[identity profile] born-running.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 02:26 am (UTC)(link)
"I do," he tells Simon, face lighting up.

{Of course I never re-post tags because of the icon, don't be silly.}

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Sarah Jane beams with rather motherly pride as she takes a sip of her wine. "He's quite brilliant at it too."

[oh, of course! *never does it either, really*]

[identity profile] slasherofprices.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"That's a very good skill to have," he says obviously. "Do you intend on becoming a mathematician someday?"

[identity profile] born-running.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 07:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"I like math, and I'm good at it," he restates, searching for a fault in his reasoning. "Doesn't that make me a mathematician already?"

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"In a way it does," Sarah Jane replies in an attempt to reassure Luke. "What Simon means, Luke, is that you can do it someday as a career. If you want to, that is."

[identity profile] slasherofprices.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 07:44 pm (UTC)(link)
"A very noble career, too. Mathematicians are among the ones who contribute most to humanity." And Skinner is all about contributing to the greater good.

[identity profile] born-running.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 07:46 pm (UTC)(link)
With just a touch of worry, "Isn't what I am now good enough?"

[identity profile] his-sarah-jane.livejournal.com 2007-11-06 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"It's more than enough," she promises, reaching out to place a comforting hand on his shoulder. "You have plenty of time to decide what to do with your life. There's absolutely no rush. None at all."
