[Theatrical Muse] Response
Dec. 7th, 2006 06:58 pmSarah Jane Smith vs. Curiosity; Describe yourself fighting against curiosity.
It’s rude, that’s what it is. Rude and unnecessary, and certainly uncalled for. She doesn’t want to ask, she really doesn’t. But, oh! He’s sitting there calmly, well, sitting there anyway, working away with his sonic screwdriver on that sheet of wood. Sometimes he pauses to fish into a paper bag containing jelly babies, always remembering to offer one to Sarah.
But she really was never fond of the taste, and it all comes back to her watching and waiting. And knowing perfectly well she shouldn’t ask. It’s none of her business. But oh, she’s so curious and so intrigued.
Curiosity always got the better of her as a child. It always got the better of her as an adult, too. Its part of the reason she decided to go into journalism – so she could ask the questions she wanted, so she could get into all sorts of trouble for a purpose. It was the most wonderful thing in the world to her.
Until she started travelling with him, that is. That quickly surpassed everything in its degrees of wonderfulness, even with the near-death experiences. And it satisfied her curiosity more than anything else ever had.
But now, oh, now she doesn’t know what to do. She knows it’s rude – oh, Sarah Jane knows all about rudeness – but oh, she wants to ask so badly. It’s been nagging her for days, for weeks even.
And it’s barmy, the question is. But it’s been nagging her and nagging her and he’s sitting there now, and oh, she wants to ask. It’s such a difficult battle to win, hard enough to fight. And Sarah can feel herself losing at every moment.
So, with a resigned sigh, she pulls her woolen hat down over her eyes as she says, “Doctor.”
“Yes, Sarah?” She doesn’t have to see to hear the amusement in his voice and know that his eyes are laughing.
She pulls the hat back up and smiles at him. She knows this is a battle she lost. So it’s now or never, and like always, she chooses now:
“Doctor, oh…! Well, this is purely academic interest, you see, but Doctor, what else do you have two of?”
