Evil spirits don't destroy oil rigs.

That much Sarah Jane knows for certain after interview upon interview with superstitious villagers and Mr Mcrannald, their innkeeper with a supposed (if not very doubtful) second sight. In fact, the whole matter seems to have been going no where. No one knew anything about the oil rig attacks, let alone anything beyond the claims of hauntings on Tulloch Moor. She still can't pinpoint a reason for the devastations, but if anyone is to ask her (and of course they wouldn't, those stubborn UNIT gits), Sarah will answer with a distinct "we're wasting our time here". There simply aren't any answers here in this town.

It's the phone call that changed all that. Shakily hanging up the telephone, Sarah looks at the Doctor, white as a ghost. "Harry's been shot!"

Everything seems to explode into the adventure they had been looking for from that point out. It's only a scalp wound, but it's frightening enough, especially when he starts to mumble incoherently about some man on a rig. That's the point where she's forced out of the room by the nurse (which isn't fair, at all, since Sarah had given up to investigate that newest disappearance on the Ben Nevis Rig to stay with Harry) and goes to call the Doctor to tell him what's going on. That's also the point where she sees what they're dealing with for the first time: some orange octopus like humanoid reaching out towards her.

The chain reaction of events continues. She escapes from the alien, hiding in a decompression room until the Doctor finds her and they get locked in. The following minutes blur when the Doctor hypnotizes her into not breathing and she remains in a trance state until Sergeant Benton restores air to the room. But it turns out they awake to a sleeping village, drugged by the humanoid aliens so something can go about unseen. It’s not long before everyone wakes up and Sarah has another close encounter with another one of these aliens again – this time, though it’s posing as Harry (and looks way too much like him for comfort). She gives chase, and it leads to a struggle in a barn loft, with the alien-Harry falling to its death when Sarah ducks out of the way to avoid being stabbed by a pitchfork.

Later on, it’s off to Forgill Castle to see the Duke regarding the Loch Ness and its monster. The Duke refuses to believe them, and Sarah has a hard time accepting that, what after the monster nearly killed the Doctor. And then for a moment she almost wishes it has, when the Doctor and the Brigadier leave her behind in the library to do the dirty job of sifting through books for evidence of the monster.

One of these days, Sarah decides, she’s going to have a talking to with the men in her life and how she’s perfectly capable of handling her own against aliens and terrorists and the like. They’re always trying to keep her out of things – out of harm’s way – and frankly, she’s getting sick of it.

When the opportunity to be left behind comes again, Sarah doesn’t let it happen. The threat of the Zygons, the aliens behind the Loch Ness monster (a cyborg Skarasen it turns out), is almost eliminated. The Doctor’s blown up the ship, and all that remains is the monster and its controller Broton, the Zygon that had been masquerading as the Duke. He plans on using it to attack the 1st International Energy Conference, and sure enough, the men are too busy worrying about how to stop it to think of anything logical. Of course they have a pass inside Stanbridge House. They have the Duke, the real Duke and the president of the Scottish Energy Commission. She accompanies the Doctor, Harry, and the Brig to Stanbridge House, just as determined to track down Broton as the rest of them.

Sarah and the Doctor find the Zygon down in the cellar and after a struggle, the Brigadier’s men come running and shoot Broton dead. Then the Doctor takes off running to deal with the Skarasen as the Brigadier goes to evacuate the building. Sarah Jane and Harry exchange glances, back on the normal footing of their friendship ever since she had found and rescued him from the Zygon spaceship earlier in the day, and take off running after him.

“It’s huge!” The Loch Ness monster. It’s the first time Sarah Jane’s ever seen a mythical creature up close, and even if it’s an alien, it’s still a magnificent sight to behold. The Doctor explains that it’ll be returning to the Loch now that it’s been fed the signaling device, and Sarah just thinks of the tourists that will come to try to get a glimpse of it. And here she is, watching it in the Thames with her own eyes.

Finally, they’re back in Scotland and back at the TARDIS where their adventure began. The Doctor looks at them all – the Duke, Sarah, the Brig, and Harry – smiling and claiming that he’ll be piloting it all the way to London and arrive their five minutes ago. She takes a step forward, looking at him doubtfully and calling his bluff. He denies it, of course, and that only makes Sarah smile.

“Coming?”

“No thank you,” answers the Brigadier, taking a step backward.

“I think I’ll stick to intercity this time, Doctor,” is Harry’s reply.

“Sarah?”

“Um.”

It’s not really a hard decision, travelling with the Doctor or not. But with this whole Zygon mess behind them, Sarah had been looking forward to a few days back home in Crodyon. Maybe a chat with Aunt Lavinia, or putting together some photographs and other belongings to decorate James’ flat with. Agreeing to another trip in the TARDIS so soon would delay all that.

There’s a look on the Doctor’s face when he asks, “No?” It’s a puppy dog eyes, desperate and pleading for her companionship, worried that she really will be behind. The frown begins a pout, and it’s only seconds before Sarah Jane can’t take it anymore.

“Alright,” she agrees. “Providing we do go straight back to London.”

He promises and even if Sarah doubts that it’s a promise he’ll keep, she shrugs at the others and smiling, dashes in to the TARDIS. She’ll get back to her London for a stay eventually. But until then, it’s off with the Doctor to places only time will reveal.
