Sarah Jane had brought the guests from Milliways through to their flat in London, leaving them to James to take care of before she hurried off to the church, Barbara in tow. She had wanted to check on all the last minute arrangements: to make sure the flowers had arrived and that the minister was there.

Everything seems perfect now. The church, a small little Gothic-esque chapel close to the Notting Hill gate tube stop, is now decorated with garlands of wildflowers along the aisles. It's the one touch Sarah Jane wanted to add to an otherwise picture-perfect room. The sun shines through the stained glass windows, causing the pews to glow. The altar was simple enough, with an organ off to one side and a lovely rosette window behind it. Two bouquets sit to either side of where the couple will stand.

Overall: the impression is of a simple yet sophisticated chapel. Everything is set for the wedding, presuming, of course, nothing goes wrong.

"He's not here," she answers quietly. The dress is on but her hair isn't pinned up yet. The make up is only halfway done. It's clear she came upstairs in the midst of preparing to look for him.

Sarah smiles briefly at John and Allana before looking back out among the small crowd gathering. "He promised that he would be here."

"Who, sweetheart?" John drawled as he shifted the sleeping princess to hold her against him, rather than on his hip. "Should...we talk in your room? What if James comes out. Blah blah bad luck!"

"The Doctor," Sarah answers as she reaches out to brush Allana's hair out of her face. "I don't care if James sees me. He promised."

"Well, his loss." John said softly, grabbing Sarah's hand as it falls from Allana's face. "C'mon. This is your special day. Don't let 'im ruin it for you. Beat 'im up later, is what I say."

Oh, she's certainly going to do that. The Doctor had never truly broken a promise to her before. She's devastated that he's picked now to start.

"It... John, why wouldn't he come?"

"Because he's being a jerk. Look, I don't know the guy, but you're important to me and your happiness is so important...and if he isn't going to support your happiness, then he deserves to have his face rearranged. I know you can handle it...but if I ever meet the guy, I may sic either Aeryn on him, or this bundle of mean princess you know."

Sarah laughs a little. "He does that on a rather regular basis, you know." Pause. "Have his face rearranged."

But the smile disappears quickly as she once again remembers everything she's giving up for this. It's a horrible time to have last minute doubts, but she can't help it.

"I just wanted everything to be perfect."

"So forget him." John said, in a commanding voice (and for this instant, he is Commander John Crichton, not the dorky idiot that runs around not knowing what to do, but the man who takes charge and gets things done). "Don't think about him today, Sarah.

"I know it's hard," He said, shifting Allana again and she mumbled something around her thumb. "But you need to concentrate on James, getting married to him, and having a family. It's the one thing that Doctor guy of yours won't ever have, Sarah. Rub that in his face when you see him next."

Before or after she punches him is up to her.

"I can't help but wonder if I'm even supposed to have it either now."

"Hey." He gave her a look, his voice still in that sharp tone. "You're having it, really, whether you're supposed to have it or not. Life is full of supposed to's, but it rarely works out that way."

Sarah Jane looks up at him, a disbelieving frown on her face. She just wants the Doctor here. She wants him here more than anyone else and he's not. How can she be certain this is the proper thing to do if he's not here to guide her?

"It ought to, at the very least."

"It doesn't." John said. "I was supposed to finish my mission, get married to the girl I loved, be best friends forever with this guy...my mom was supposed to live, I was supposed to grow old in the town I grew up in, maybe travel back to where I was born every so often. It's not going to happen that way."
