[Mixed Muses] A Date with Simon

The door opens to a cozy attic neatly cluttered with many assorted nicknacks. Some of the objects are easily recognisable: books, photo frames, papers, etc. Others, though, are much more alien in origin.

Sarah Jane smiles warmly as she moves aside to let Simon through. Then, she shrugs slightly. "I don't typically have much company up here."

"Then I'm sorry you wound up caring for someone like me."

Sarah shakes her head, not understanding.

"Why?"

He shakes his head, silent again. It's just a difference of opinion.

"There is something worth caring about in you, Simon."

"Like what?"

"The very fact that for some daft reason, you seem to care about me," she answers with a dry laugh.

Then, on a more serious note: "Your regret. There's a good man in you, Simon, or you wouldn't feel this way."

"I regret too much," he replies.

"Better that you do than you don't. It makes you human."

"But it doesn't change anything, does it? All this remorse, regret: it doesn't change what you've done." He sighs. "I'm repeating myself. I have been for a long time."

"It doesn't," she murmurs. "But it does mean that you're capable of more. You have a second chance. Most people don't get one of those. Make the most of it, Simon, and perhaps the remorse and regret will go away."

Simon rubs his hands against his face. Maybe, but then he'll have to deal with this fake body of his. He's starting to think he would have been better off going directly to hell, or whatever not-heavenly place he was headed to. (Problem: hell or wherever doesn't have Sarah.)

She kisses his temple before returning to stroke his hair again.

"I've seen too much to believe that things don't happen without a reason. I don't believe in coincidences, but I do believe in second chances."

He closes his eyes, lowering his hands to his lap. "I think it will be some time before I believe the same."

"Which is exactly why you ought not to go through this alone, Simon."

She sighs for a moment, closing her own eyes as she rests her head back against his shoulder.

His lips quirk into a very small smile. "You know, you're making this very difficult for me."

She grins ever so much as well. "Isn't that the point?"

"If you insist."

"I do. Very much so."

"Well, I insist--very much so--that we go back to the bar so I can wallow in self-pity."

She frowns for a moment, considering.

"Will I be allowed to stay?"

"Depends on how interesting you find a pity party."

Quietly, "You shouldn't be alone."

"Then stay with me. I can't promise I'll make for interesting company."

"I will," she says quietly, yet willfully. She kisses his temple once more before standing and holding out a hand.

"Shall we get going?"

"Guess so," he replies, grabbing her hand, rising to his feet.
